When to Use Storage During a House Move — and When Not To

Storage is one of the most useful tools available during a house move — and one of the most misused. Used in the right circumstances, storage can bridge timing gaps, reduce stress and give you the flexibility to handle an imperfect move. Used unnecessarily, it adds cost, complexity and additional handling of your belongings. This guide helps you identify when storage genuinely helps and when to avoid it.

When storage genuinely helps

The completion gap

The most common reason people use storage during a house move is a gap between their move-out date and their move-in date. This happens when the purchase chain does not align perfectly — you must vacate your current property before you can access the new one.

In this situation, storage is not just useful but necessary. The alternative — delaying your move-out or completing on two properties simultaneously — is rarely practical. A short-term storage solution of one to four weeks bridges the gap neatly, allowing you to vacate on time and move into the new property when it is ready.

Renovation or building work in progress

If your new property requires significant building work before it is liveable — a new kitchen, bathroom renovation, rewiring or structural work — moving your household goods into a building site is asking for damage. Storing your belongings until the work is complete and the property is clean and ready is the sensible approach.

This is particularly important for furniture, soft furnishings and electronics which can be irreparably damaged by dust, moisture and construction debris.

Downsizing — more belongings than the new home can accommodate

When moving to a significantly smaller property, storage can provide breathing space to decide what to keep and what to sell, donate or dispose of. Rather than making rushed decisions under moving-day pressure, items go into storage and you work through them methodically over the following weeks.

International relocation with a gap

For people relocating internationally — particularly from the UK to Dubai or elsewhere — there is often a gap between vacating the UK property and the sea freight shipment arriving at the destination. Short-term UK storage during this period keeps belongings safe and accessible if any items need to be retrieved before shipping.

Always confirm insurance during storage

Any reputable storage provider should provide comprehensive insurance cover for all items in storage. Confirm the level of cover, the excess and the claims process before signing any storage agreement.

When storage adds unnecessary cost and complexity

When the timing works without it

If your move-out and move-in dates align — or can be aligned with some flexibility — storage adds cost and an additional handling of your belongings with no benefit. Every time your belongings are loaded, transported and unloaded, there is a marginal additional risk of damage. Eliminating unnecessary moves of your goods is always preferable.

When it is used to avoid making decisions

Storage should not be used as a way of deferring the decision to declutter. Items that sit in storage for more than six months are very rarely retrieved and used again. If you are putting items into storage because you cannot face deciding what to do with them, the storage cost is almost certainly money wasted. A better approach is to commit to a decluttering exercise before the move.

When the cost exceeds the value of the items

For lower-value items — old furniture, appliances, garden equipment — the monthly storage cost over several months can quickly exceed the items' replacement value. In these cases, it is more cost-effective to sell, donate or dispose of the items and replace them if needed.
