Parking Suspensions for London Removals: Everything You Need to Know

One of the most overlooked aspects of a London house move is parking. Removal vehicles are large - a standard removal lorry is typically between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes and up to 7 metres long. In most London streets, this vehicle cannot simply park on a yellow line or in a resident parking bay without risk of a parking penalty or being towed. A parking suspension - formally called a Temporary Suspension of Parking Restrictions - is how you ensure your removal vehicle has legal access to your property on moving day.

What is a parking suspension?

A parking suspension is a formal order from the local council that temporarily suspends parking restrictions on a specific stretch of public road for a defined period. During a suspension, the normal restrictions (yellow lines, resident parking bays, loading restrictions) are lifted and a removal vehicle can park legally at the kerbside outside your property.

Parking suspensions are marked with yellow and black "No Parking" cones or boards placed along the suspended section of road on the day of the suspension.

Which London boroughs require a suspension?

Every London borough has its own parking restriction rules, and the necessity for a suspension depends on the specific street and the type of restrictions in place. In general:

When in doubt, apply for a suspension. The cost of a suspension is far less than the cost of a parking penalty notice or having your removal vehicle towed.

How to apply for a parking suspension

Each London borough handles parking suspension applications independently. Most now have online application systems - search for "[borough name] parking suspension" and you will find the relevant council page. You will need to provide the specific street address, the dates and times required, and the reason for the suspension (house removal).

Apply at least 10 working days in advance

Most London boroughs require a minimum of five to ten working days notice for a parking suspension. Some boroughs - particularly in central London - require up to 28 days notice for certain streets. Apply as soon as you have a confirmed move date.

How much does a parking suspension cost?

Parking suspension costs vary by borough, typically ranging from £55 to £120 per bay per day. A standard removal requires approximately one to three bays at each end of the move (the loading address and the delivery address), so the total cost for both ends of a London move is typically between £100 and £350.

Some boroughs charge per bay while others charge per section of road. The council website for your specific borough will confirm the current fees.

What if I do not get a suspension?

Proceeding without a suspension in a street where restrictions apply risks a Penalty Charge Notice of £130 (£65 if paid within 14 days) per vehicle per contravention. More seriously, in some central London boroughs, illegally parked vehicles on yellow lines can be towed - adding tow and storage charges to the penalty and potentially causing significant delays to your move.

A removal vehicle that cannot park close to your property significantly slows the move - crews must carry items further, which adds time and cost to an hourly-rate removal.

Evening and weekend moves - the parking advantage

One significant advantage of an evening or weekend removal is that parking restrictions in many London streets only apply during defined hours - typically 8am to 6pm or 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday. A move that begins after restrictions end eliminates the need for a formal suspension and reduces cost.
