How to Prepare for Moving Day: The Night-Before Checklist

The evening before your house move is one of the most important periods of the entire process. What you do in those final hours determines how smoothly moving day runs. A well-prepared property means the crew can begin immediately, work efficiently and complete the move in less time.

The night-before checklist

Packing

• Finish packing all remaining boxes - the crew should not arrive to find unpacked items
• Seal every box with tape and label clearly with contents and destination room
• Set aside your first night essentials box - clearly labelled and accessible
• Dismantle any furniture you agreed to dismantle - beds, wardrobes, shelving
• Place items not going on the van - plants, valuables, medications - in a designated separate area

The property

• Clear all access routes - hallways, stairs and doorways must be clear for safe, efficient movement
• Defrost the fridge and freezer if not already done
• Run washing machine and dishwasher one final time and leave doors open to dry
• Empty all bins - removal crews do not take rubbish

Practical preparations

• Confirm crew arrival time and ensure someone is present to receive them
• Confirm key collection arrangements - what time and who
• Charge your phone fully
• Prepare cash for incidentals and crew gratuity if you choose
• Ensure any parking suspension cones are in place before the crew arrives

For families

• Confirm childcare arrangements for moving day
• Pack children's overnight bags separately and accessibly
• Feed and settle pets for the night

The morning of the move

Get up early. Have the kettle ready for when the crew arrives. Do a final walk-through of every room, cupboard, loft and garden shed before loading begins. Take meter reading photographs at the old property before leaving.
