Moving House in Summer: Tips for a Smooth Summer Removal

Summer is the busiest season for house moves. School holidays, longer daylight hours and drier weather all make it attractive - but the peak season also brings specific challenges: removal companies book up weeks in advance, the heat is physically demanding and the logistics of children who are off school require extra planning.

Book early - summer slots fill fast

The single most important piece of advice for a summer move is to book as early as possible. July, August and the first two weeks of September are our busiest months. Friday moves - the most popular completion day - can be booked solid for weeks from June onwards. Book the moment you have a confirmed date.

The heat - protecting belongings and crew

Moving in hot weather is physically demanding. Ensure cold drinks are available for the crew throughout the day - a small gesture that makes a meaningful difference to efficiency. For your belongings: electronics should not sit in a hot van for extended periods. Laptops, televisions, musical instruments and vinyl records are all heat-sensitive. Transport these in your air-conditioned car where possible. Candles, toiletries and food can melt or spoil in a hot van - these travel with you.

Children off school

Summer moves mean children are home on moving day. Arrange childcare so children are not underfoot during the physical move. If this is not possible, designate one adult whose sole job is managing children - not helping with the move.

Take advantage of the long days

A summer move can run from 7am to 8pm in British Summer Time. This flexibility allows for large moves that cannot be completed in a single standard working day.

Garden items

Clean garden furniture, barbecues and outdoor tools before the move - mud and soil on outdoor items transfers to other belongings in the van. Deflate inflatable items completely. Drain hoses and water features before loading.

Start early on moving day

The coolest part of summer moving day is the early morning. Starting at 7am or 8am means the heaviest work is done before the midday heat - and maximises time to settle in before evening.
