One of the most common questions when planning a move is how long it will take. The answer depends on several factors - but here are realistic estimates based on property size and type to help you plan your moving day.
Removal times by property size
Studio or one-bedroom flat
Two to four hours for a local move with a professional team, assuming items are already packed. A well-organised studio can be completed in closer to two hours. A one-bedroom flat with significant book or vinyl collections will be at the upper end.
Two-bedroom property
Three to six hours for a local move. Well-organised with all boxes packed and labelled lands at the lower end. Challenging access or items needing packing on the day pushes toward six hours.
Three-bedroom house
Five to eight hours for a local move. This is the most variable category - a minimalist three-bedroom with organised boxes moves faster than a family home with a full loft, garage, garden shed and fifteen years of belongings.
Four or five-bedroom house
Seven to twelve hours, often requiring two vehicles and a larger crew. Very large moves may be better planned over two days.
What adds time to a removal
- Unpacked items on moving day - the single biggest cause of delays. Our packing service the day before eliminates this.
- Difficult access - narrow stairs, no lift, long carries from vehicle to door.
- Specialist items - pianos, safes, gym equipment all require additional time and crew.
- Distance - drive time between properties is additional to loading and unloading.
- Key delays on completion day - if keys are released late, the move cannot begin at the delivery end until access is available.
Planning your moving day
For a typical three-bedroom move: crew arrives at 8am, loading complete by 11am, at new property by midday, unloading complete by 3pm, crew departs by 4pm. Add one to two hours for longer distances or complicating factors. Always confirm key release time with your solicitor before finalising your day plan.
Keys on completion day are only released once funds are received - typically between 11am and 2pm. Confirm the expected time with your solicitor and build your day around it, not an assumed time.
